A huge congratulations to this weeks winners of the key stage 2 TTRockstars battle, Goldcrests. So many of the children spent time at home logging in and playing games to learn their times tables. Not only are their speeds improving, but we are transforming our maths in other areas too! This really is our vision in action!
Special mention to Kacper, Kevin and Venetia who all won special awards for their dedication! The second full week of term has been very enjoyable. Kookaburras have been honing their Maths skills by comparing numbers using the greater and less than signs as well as consolidating and expanding their understanding of 2d and 3d shapes. We have finished reading the last of the Jill Murphy picture books and have been picking out some of the repeated phrases used by some of the characters in her stories. Do you know who wanted, “Five minutes peace from you lot”? Finding an unused compost bin behind the shed in the Fledglings garden was very exciting, and we have now put it to good use outside our classroom where we can compost all the fruit peelings from break time snacks. We had great fun picking up all the mouldy apples under the school fruit trees to get our compost started. We are determined that we will not waste a single apple this year even if it means we have to make lots of apple crumble! Watch this space to see what we do with our bumper crop…
We have been busy birds this week! On top of working extremely hard in maths, English and reading, we have continued getting creative with recycled materials as part of our sustainable art project. It was been amazing to see some really well considered sculptures come to life and we can't wait to share with you the finished designs for our worship garden. In English, we have continued focusing on non-chronological reports. This week, we learnt about Anita Roddick by completing a scavenger hunt. We used out geography skills to read maps and find the answers. Everyone was so successful!
All the Year 2 Kookaburras have made a really positive start to the beginning of the school year and should feel very proud of themselves. It was nice to have some warm sun to accompany PE on the field although it was quite hot in class by the middle of the afternoon. We have enjoyed reading stories written by the author Jill Murphy as part of our reading enrichment, especially ‘Meltdown’ about a small rabbit and a supermarket tantrum about cake! The work we have been exploring about zones of regulation has been fun and we all enjoyed painting pictures of people representing some of the emotions in each zone.
Skylarks and Goldcrests have created some fantastic useful objects and artwork, using recycled materials, as part of their home learning this week. Take a look at what we have created!
The children in Fledglings class have been busy exploring their learning environment and developing their friendships. They have enjoyed using books inside and out to find out more about their interests. Hector enjoyed using the photobook made by the children in Fledglings class last year to match objects in the transient art area. Daniel wanted to know more about birds after finding lots of feathers in the garden. Sophia and Dragos enjoyed looking at the books from the 'Shark in the Park' series, they have become a class favorite already. Jayden had fun looking through the books outside. Zayan and Vaiga used books to inspire their cretive projects. They demonstrated their ability to follow instructions and to review and adapt their work where needed. Inspired by a book about socks, Sammara decided to make a sock puppet in the sewing area. She used needle and thread to sew on eyes, developing her fine motor skills. Tom bought in a map for us to look at. He and Franek enjoyed looking at the features of the map and then having a go at creating their. The children continue to enjoy being creative and have been really busy in the art area. Curisoity Corner has provided lots of opportunities for awe and wonder - sparking some great discussions on light, shadow, shape and colour. An opportunity for adult to encourage and introduce new vocabulary. There has been lots of opportunities for practical maths both inside and out. The children continue to challenge themselves physically by traversing, swinging, climbing and jumping and supporting each other to balance, build and slide. This week we stared getting ideas for our sculpture project in art. We explored recycled materials which we may use and drew our designs for our sculptures which are inspired by our vision, Learning, Transforming, Growing. We can't wait to start making them next week... watch this space!
What a fantastic week we have had getting to know each other in Kingfisher class. Welcoming new friends and reconnecting with old. We were extremely excited to receive a letter from the author and Vet Jess French asking us to spread the word about recycling. Look at some of our amazing posters!
Kingfishers have been working together to create a poster to help us think about our emotions and which zone we are in. Kestrels and Wrens began their Curiosity space project with a bang! They were challenged to put their engineering skills to the test and develop a rover to explore planets, inspired by the Mars rover, Curiosity. Look at the cooperation, precision and not to mention the determination. Not all travelled instantly but we were fantastic at solving problems and investigating how to make our rovers effective at their role.
