Over the last few weeks, we have been learning all about recycling. As a class, we decided that we wanted to educate others about our new found knowledge so that we can all help to look after our amazing planet together.
In small groups, we each took a particular area relating to recycling and made our own pages for our class non-fiction book. To help us with our writing, we learnt our sentences verbally and then made our own text maps. We then used our text maps, as plans, to write our final pieces.

Orla noticed something on the curiosity shelf that she didn’t recognise. The children wondered what it might be, lots of talk and predictions.
We found out it was a brass candle holder. We loved looking at the rolling wax and talking about colours, sounds and smells. It was like The Great British Bake Off in Kookaburra class as the children learnt how to rub in butter, flour and sugar to make the crumble topping for their fruit crumbles. They selected the fruit they wanted, after testing many different types, and then added the topping and put them in the oven to bake. Then the most important part… tasting and evaluating! We have also started our new Book Study and are really enjoying the Meg and Mog stories by Helen Nicoll and Jan Pienkowski. We have discovered that Meg’s spells are always written inside a green zig zag, they rhyme and they nearly always go wrong! We also love the way the words become part of the illustration. Look out for our own Meg pictures coming soon…
Today in Kingfishers we have been using Chromebooks to login into Purple Mash for the first time. We created our own avatar and talked about keeping our login details safe. Some children from Goldcrests headed to Banbury town centre to have a go on a BMX track in celebration of the Women's Tour of Britain. All the children who came were really brave and showed both resilience and positivity. Amazing!
Kingfishers have been busy sharing and having fun with friends – using blocks to see who is taller, making a setting for a story and being creative in our tinkering station. On Wednesday Wrens and Kestrels ventured off to Oxford Castle and Prison to experience what life was like for prisoners and explore how punishments have changed through the years.
What a wow-filled day for the beginning of our Writing Wrongs topic before we delve into crime, punishment, rights and responsibilities this term. We discovered that prison was different depending on your wealth and experienced a prison cell. We were locked up but don’t worry grown ups, the key was kept safe! let’s not forget the endless amount of steep steps climbs to reach the peak of the tower. What a view! Enjoy the photos from a spectacular day! On Monday, all children in Skylarks and Goldcrests visited the Black Country Living Museum to kick start their 'Writing Wrongs' topic. Not only did we all learn lots about the life of a child in Victorian times, we had the best time! Take a look at some of the pictures we took... It’s been another busy week for Kingfishers. We have been working on our mathematics skills representing values in lots of different ways. We have had lots of fun using stem sentences to help us explain our mathematical thinking. We have also been busy developing our drawing skills creating self-portraits. We have looked closely at our individual features and linked them to shapes that we know to help develop our sketching skills. After another warm week, we have thoroughly enjoyed watching how our solar panel water fountains work along with closely observing how our beautiful surroundings are slowly changing from season to season. Kookaburras have been really committed to reducing food waste this week with pupils even bringing in fruit waste from home to add to our Kookaburra Compost bin. They have also been encouraging other year groups to put their fruit cores and banana skins, from morning snacks, into the same place. Some Kookaburras were out over the weekend foraging for blackberries as part of their home learning and we have been busy in class evaluating and improving our original apple crumble recipe. We decided to test lots of other seasonal fruits too in case we want to use them instead. We clearly have some budding chefs in our midst who enjoyed working on their knife skills! Look at the recipe below to make your own Autumn Fruit Crumble! You can find more of our favorite recipes at Cookery Corner!
