This week in Kingfishers we have had so much fun being together, learning and discovering!
In maths, we have been looking at ordering numbers, using different resources and activities to see numbers in a variety of ways. We took ordering numbers further by using our computing programme 'Purple Mash', where there are a lots of tools and games to help us explore and secure ordering numbers. Children were intrigued by our WOW tray this week, learning all about shells; linking to our United project. We spoke about size, shape, textures, patterns and how when we held them up to our ears we could hear the ocean! We love to be creative here in Kingfishers and spend a lot of time together exploring, drawing and making in our creative area. We have had lots of discussion and laughter around the table this week; helping each other and asking questions. Come back to see what we've been learning next week, we can't wait for you to see!

We have been working very hard in Cuckoo Class this week and enjoying both our
Maths and English. In English we have been writing letters this term and this week we wrote to the polar bear in the Dear Polar Story that we have read as part of our United project. We used writing grids to help construct our sentences and decided what present to send to the bear to cheer him up. Later in the week, we wrote on a more serious theme as we have started to think about plastic pollution in our seas and what we can do to reverse this. We have also continued to enjoy our Find out Friday Maths session and this week we were investigating the number of vowels in all of our first names. It took quite a long time to collect all our data so we will have to carry on our investigation next week! We are enjoying using our new pattern blocks to challenge our spatial awareness. We have been really busy in Fledgling Class again this week. We have enjoyed experimenting with the sewing table. We have made our own parrots out of socks, found out how to sew our own bags and made a communal tapestry! We have been doing lots of measuring too. Finding out about the length of our feet, comparing them with shoes on and off. We also enjoyed measuring objects around the garden using the tape measure. We had a new telescope in the classroom and had great fun looking at things around the classroom. We found looking at the sky really fascinating. We got dressed up at Pirates and made our own pirate hats in the creative area. We learnt a sea shanty and explored a variety of Pirate themed books. We continue to enjoy using Tales Toolkit in the classroom, narrating and illustrating our own stories! School Values in Action: Congratulations to Aniela in Reception and Zayan in Nursery who were awarded the 'Values Certificate' this week from Mrs Woods for demonstrating Compassion. Both children showing support to their Fledgling friends when they needed help. We have been exploring the theme of prejudice across a number of texts. This drama session took us through scenarios in the book The Island and then explored the idea of a bystander taking action against what they had previously been part of.
We have been really busy exploring outside. We invented our own dance routines for others to copy. Invented our own games in using the maths equipment and even intented our own stories! We investigated weights and explored some very big bubbles! Kingfishers have had an excellent learning week, exploring our project theme of United even further with the use of maps to research, find and name the different countries that make the United Kingdom. Using atlases and the internet has helped us to discover what and where the countries are on a map.
Continuing with our project theme, we also explored flags and looked at all the flags around the world. Each child chose a flag to recreate using different mediums, such as paint and pencil; others used the collage technique, ripping, overlapping and sticking to make parts of a flag. In maths this week, we have been investigating greater than, less than and equal to. One activity was Numicon City, where children had to match the numicon pieces in the building shapes, find out how much they were worth and then compare them using the 3 statements of 'greater than, less than and equal to'. In science, Kingfishers have been inspecting different materials, with a link to our theme of ocean pollution. Children were able to recognise and name materials then compare and organise into groups of 'plastic' and 'non-plastic'.
We have really enjoyed out learning in Year 2 this week and are very proud of what we have achieved. In Geography, we have been learning about the continents of the world and even drew fee hand maps of the continent of Africa. Our new jigsaw puzzles are helping us to remember where the continents fit into the map of the world and also about some of the animals that live in each one. Lots of us enjoyed Super Lunch Thursday and did data handling and statistics in Maths to find out about our favourite lunches. We have written letters to Lorraine and Rosie who work in the kitchen to give them our feedback.
Look at the photos of our UKS 2 bubble having fun at lunchtime. Can you spot examples of Compassion, Endurance, Koinonia and Truth? |
