We have had a really busy first few weeks back in Fledglings! A visit from Thames Valley Police and 2 police dogs in our first week, followed by a WOW Forest School Afternoon in Week 2!
We have welcomed lots of new faces into the classroom and our new Fledglings are doing a fantastic job of picking up our school routines and expectations. Last year's children have really stepped up to show our new friends how to be 'Fantastic Fledglings' too, which is lovely to see. We have been busy exploring our indoor and outdoor classrooms every day. You can see some of our learning in the photos below!

World Book day was a joyful celebration at St Mary's. Fledglings enjoyed a book scavenger hunt, the Pupil Leadership team ran a book swap at lunchtime and we shared lots of stories! Enjoy spending your book voucher. Fledglings were able to share a special reading worship with Year 6 this week. The Owls came down to EYFS and shared books with one or two Fledglings each. It was lovely to see the oldest children at St. Mary's looking after the youngest and enjoying a wide range of texts. The discussions ranged from different types of birds to LEGO Star Wars and everything in between!
We had a very exciting day on Tuesday when Badminton champion Jordan Hart came to visit us in school. Earlier in the day, we talked in the classroom about what an athlete is and all the sports we could think of. We then went to a whole school worship where Jordan played us some video clips of her matches and told us how she became an athlete. We were then able to do an exercise workshop with her where we explored moving our bodies in different ways. It was lots of fun! Group 1: keen canoeists! We had a fantastic day paddling our canoes along the canal. It was challenging to get the canoes off the trailer but we worked together as a team and then we were off. It was difficult to work together but we got the hang of it in the end and all finished with smiles on our faces. We stopped off for lunch and enjoyed the carrot cakes and even had our first taste of Welsh cakes. Group 2: monkeying around!Today it was our turn to hit the high ropes, the zip wire and the climbing wall. We found it tricky at first but we all challenged ourselves and tried our best. It was great to hear lots of words of encouragement from our friends. The zip wire was amazing because it felt like we were flying. Group 3: cracking caves! We started our day by preparing for adventures in the cave: putting on caving suits and getting our helmets fitted. When we arrived, we did a long walk and took in the amazing views. They were truly spectacular and for a while, we didn't believe they were real. Once at the caves, we enjoyed exploring and some of us even took on a bonus challenge! Group 4: conquering the caves! We climbed, crawled and squeezed our ways through some very narrow passages today! Some of us found it really challenging but we all had fun and tried our best. We really worked on our teamwork skills as we had to help each other and support each other in order to make us all to feel successful and ensure that no one got left behind.
Group 1 went cave hunting! It started with a wet and windy walk up to the top of the mountain to find the caves. We did it! It was cold, muddy and many tight crevices to squeeze into- but we all loved it! And we even saw bats silently sleeping! Group 2 went caving! Today we have had a very fun day. We have been on a BIG adventure because...First of all, we walked up the mountain and the wind nearly blew us away! It was wet, windy but we were getting more and more exited every step we took! We had to do a tricky challenge crawling through a tiny triangle, but we did it! It was very tricky but all of us thankfully made it. By Nikki and Leona. Group 3 on the amazing high ropes and zip wire. It was hard, challenging but so rewarding. Lilly said 'I had to reach for my goals and focus on what I could do, yet it was hard and the wind was crazy but I kept on looking forward then I did complete it and it made me feel like I could do anything if I tried' Group 4 canoeing on the canal
On Wednesday group 4 went canoeing, but luckily nobody fell in the canal because the water was very calm. Even though it was cold everybody tried their hardest and paddled very well and showed endurance. By Ivy and Emilie Group 1: amazing high ropersToday group 1 completed the high ropes courses of Woodlands which consists of a zipline and a rock climbing wall. To get to the zipline you have to climb a tree, with the rock climbing wall there was an easier side (that had a slope to climb up) and on the harder side goes straight up. Jah'Dae Group 2: out on the canalToday, we went to the canal (we don't know what it was called because the writing was all in Welsh). We drove there and we had to take the canoe boats off the racks ourselves so we could paddle them. It was very fun because our leader (Dylan) let us stand up on the boats as a challenge. We also had to go through rapids which were also fun but it kept bringing us back so we had to do them again. The canal went around in a circle. Meisha Group 3: we all had funToday we went to the canal. It was a different experience. I thought it was going to be easy but no, it was pretty hard to use the paddles and I realised it was going to be tricky early on. However, it was worth it as we all had a good workout and finished with smiles on our faces. At times, we tried to have a race and make it competition. Oliver V Group 4: the amazing climbersToday we went rock climbing and it was quite tricky but we all had lots of fun. The first activity we did was climb a big wall with rocks to put you hands and feet in. Then we trained to do some platforming. We had a helmet, hiking boots, waterproofs and carabiners. It was lots of fun! There was one that was up in a tree and you had to zipline over to the other side.
Isaac We arrived safe and sound just in time for a quick tour before we got into our activity groups to have lunch. It was then time for us all to unpack before participating in outdoor business. This meant challenging ourselves both mentally and physically and, most importantly, working together as a team.
After finishing the afternoon activities, we all ate dinner together before going on a night time walk. It was hard work climbing to the top of the hill but the view of the night sky was worth it! After a gentle amble back to the centre, we enjoyed hot chocolate in our PJs before settling in our dorms. We can't wait for a full day of activities tomorrow! We will make sure more photos are uploaded but remember to keep an eye on Twitter for some more updates during the day. It has been lovely to welcome Fledglings back to the classroom today. Our topic this term is Fairy Tales and Traditional Stories. We have jumped straight in with learning the story of Cinderella. Our role play area has been set up as a castle and we spotted straight away that the Prince in the story lived in a castle! We have had lots of fun making shields today and dressing up as princesses, princes and knights. In other areas of the classroom, we have been exploring light and dark using torches, and enjoying small world imaginative play with emergency vehicles and people. |
