We have enjoyed collaborative learning this week. Making up maths games outside, working together on puzzles and teaching each other how to make castles and space rockets out of shapes and boxes. Ajwa has been working hard on her letter formation. We continue to develop our love of reading and writing noticing logos and characters in magazines and books. We are enjoying the Spring weather and have been outside making the most of our environment. Inventing recipes in the mud kitchen. Building things to support our play and finding out about the world around us.

We have been super busy this week. We have been scientists investigating melting times with chocolate. In mathematics we have continued learning about Census and collected our own data about fitness levels – how many skips can you do in 1 minute? On Wednesday we completed our final Co Joe’s mission of this term working on our communication skills and rescuing the explorers. Friday saw us taking part in the whole school Red Nose Day celebrations, with some fantastic hero costumes. WOW! What a day! Did someone say it was Red Nose Day? Did someone mention a Dance-a-thon?! Absolutely they did! We boogied all afternoon! Fun, laughter and lots of dancing! We had so much fun getting involved in games and dancing the afternoon away, but most importantly helping such an amazing cause- Comic relief! We even had a special visit from Paddington, Aunt Lucy and amazing inspirational superheroes! Thank you to everyone who made today special, enjoying yourselves abs for your donations This week, the children have been busy analysing different types of data, from previous Census questionnaires, and answering questions about them. They then spent time collecting their own data which included modes of transport at different times of the day and the height of children across the year groups. They then explored how to find the mean of their results and present their data using Excel spreadsheets.
In maths we have been learning about the census. We picked 8 drink and investigated the amount of sugar in them. We then created a bar chart from this data. SINCE TIME IN SWALLOWS
We were exploring the melting point of chocolate. We found out that if you put chocolate in water and the temperature of the water is 10c it will never melt, it will stay hard but if the water was 30c it would take it 6 mins and 30 secs to melt. The hotter the water, the quicker the chocolate will melt. We found it had a higher melting point than ice. Kingfishers have made a super start to their learning in History. We explored photographs in our museum day on Monday where we looked at photos which we all thought were from the past. We found out that one of the lady's in the photographs is Florence Nightingale who was a nurse and helped hospitals become the clean and hygienic places they are today. We have also been doing some observational drawings of lamps which are absolutely beautiful!
It has been wonderful welcoming all the children to learn together in the classroom. In English, we started the week recapping the features of a newspaper report. We then became journalists as something strange happened during the storm early on Thursday morning. We used our investigative skills to find out the facts and we will be collating them into newspaper reports of our own! Watch this space to find out what has been going on. In science, we have been grouping materials according to their state (solid, liquid and gas) and looking at how the properties vary in each state. Some of us used ball pit balls to show how the particles are different. Can you tell which picture shows which state? Take a look at our learning in CoJo’s this week. We really challenged our team building and communication skills. The children have also loved learning about the census! We have looked at the data in tables, pictograms, bar charts, pie charts and line graphs to help us answer different questions about the country we live in and how it has changed over time. Next week, we will be collecting our own data.
Make sure you count in the census! To find out more, please visit census.gov.uk The children in Fedglings have been getting ready for the census.
We talked about things we wanted to find out from our friends and how we could record the answers. Aniela wanted to know if people liked Kittens. Munesu wanted to find out if people liked Chocolate ice cream. Natasca wanted to find out if children liked tidying up ... All questions close to our hearts! It has been so lovely to have all of Cuckoo class back together again and we have had a fantastic week! In Maths we have been learning all about the national Census and how to collect, organise and interpret data. We have travelled back in time to look at the work of Florence Nightingale and even set up our own field hospital in the classroom complete with lantern making and bandaging stations.
